A Scare

At least this time it wasn't my kids' fault-like Nathan trying to use my full length mirror as a slide (I don't own one any longer) or him pulling the cart and his sister sitting inside down on top of him (seriously, we'd been in the store for two minutes), or Esther writing letters on the top of her nightstand (we've never had that problem before!)

This time it was the neighbors. Or somebody. For several weeks now, I've been hearing occasional whacks against the back of the house. I thought someone was throwing things from the empty field behind our back fence. But I never found what had been thrown in the yard. But now I know what has been going on.

BB guns. And most likely kids or teens as the hits have been after school hours.

Guess how I know.

We now have a hole in our window.

Fortunately, it only went through one pane and stopped, leaving a round hole about 3.5 inches in diameter and shattered glass between the panes. I called the police to report the incident but there isn't much for them to do as I have little to tell them.

No, we don't have any enemies. No, I haven't seen any kids toting BB guns through the neighborhood. We hardly see our neighbors.

So we call the insurance and get it fixed and hope it doesn't happen again-especially while the kids and I are outside! If it happens again, I may just start yelling. I assume whoever is shooting would be within hearing range. But what good would "Show yourself, you hooligans!" be? Sigh. Not really what I wanted to deal with, but it could have been worse, I guess!

Maybe you should set up a big sign outside that reads "Lawyer Lives Here". That might scare them off! Nope, probably not. Sorry for the fuss and the broken window--crazy hooligans!

That is a little scary. Some people are just crazy. I am glad you got the window fixed though.

Oh my goodness! NOT something you want to have to deal with. Ack! I like Heather B's suggestion - let 'em know it's a lawyer's house. Oh, unless that makes you more of a target! haha
We have some security cameras you could use if you want. Other than that I really don't know what you could do, but, wow, definitely not cool. So glad no one got hurt!

It's possible that whoever is shooting the gun has no idea that they are damaging your house. Hate to say it but teenagers often don't think. (I have some) Handle it the right way and you might teach some kids a good lesson both in responsibility and kindness. Remember the story of the young "hooligan" who snatched that old lady's purse and she brought him home taught him a lesson, feed him and then gave him money to go buy some shoes. I think you and Daron could have some fun handling this very cleverly! Are you two write the book on clever! Still scary though! Not what I'd want to deal with! Keep us posted.
